PRACTICAL INFORMATION

SAFETY AND CANCELLATIONS

Therefore, many of the excursions you can choose from are outdoors and often in the spectacular but untamed and rugged coastal landscape and its surrounding waters.

In addition to its beauty, the Norwegian coast is also known for having a lot of weather. You can experience four seasons in one day, and occasionally the weather can be unsuitable for the operation of excursions.

Our priority is always the safety and comfort of our guests, and if local conditions mean that we must cancel any excursion then of course the cost will be refunded.

HOLIDAY

There are also a few days a year when it is likely many excursions will not operate: Christmas Eve (24 Dec), New Year’s Day (1 Jan) And Norway’s National Day (17 May). Your journey and experience onboard will instead reflect these special anniversaries and in some ports, we will look to arrange alternative excursions, but they will only be available for sale onboard.

NUMBERS OF PARTICIPANTS

If there are not enough participants for an excursion to run, it may be cancelled. The minimum number of participants is stated on each excursion.

GUIDING AND LANGUAGES

All excursions offer multilingual guides. Unless otherwise specified on the excursion, guides will provide information in Norwegian, English and German. Other languages on request.

ACCESSIBILITY

We try and ensure our excursions are accessible for as many passengers as possible. However there may be some restrictions. Therefore, we will evaluate each excursion based on a case by case basis for each guest if you have any mobility issues or individual requirements. Please contact us in advance, and we’ll help to customise an optimal voyage for you along the Norwegian coast.

When you are in the visitor centre beneath the enormous Trollveggen, you might wonder how it is possible to climb such mountains. You will find this out in the film you are shown at Norsk Tindesenter. The architecture of Norsk Tindesenter is spectacular and mirrors the mountains around it. Exhibitions are held in the centre, and it also boasts the highest indoor climbing wall in Norway. To round off the trip, take the Romsdal gondola to 700 m above sea level. This trip takes you to two of the best beaches in the Lofoten Islands: Hauklandstranda, which has been named Europe’s best beach by Lonely Planet, and Uttakleiva, which many people think is the most romantic beach i Norway because of its combination of fine sand and large rocks.

The beaches are at the far edge of the sea in tiny villages with just a handful of inhabitants. The bus trip goes through the beautiful Lofoten countryside, and you can get out and walk across a low mountain pass between the two beaches. There are spectacular views in all directions, with plenty of opportunity to take snaps of some of Norway’s most photographed beaches.

Day 10

HIKING AT TORGHAT TEN

Come along to one of the most distinctive mountains that we sail past on the Havila Kystruten ship: Torghatten, the mountain with a big hole right through it.

Time: 15:15 – 17:15

Level: 3

Season: 1 Apr – 31 Oct Min/max persons: 4 – 45 Code: BNNS1

Torghatten has a naturally formed tunnel in the middle of the mountain, 12–15 metres wide, twice as high and 160 metres long. The hole was formed when the North American and European continental plates collided 600 million years ago, but while science tells us one thing, legends tell us something else.

According to one story, a brute of a troll fired an arrow at a girl who was running away from him. The king in one of the other mountains saw this and threw his hat in between so that the arrow went through the hat. Then the sun rose and as happens in legends, the sunlight turned the trolls to stone, just as it did with the Seven Sisters, the mountain range close to Sandnessjøen

The Atlantic Ocean Road is also a popular place for car commercials, and more recently as the location of a car chase scene for the new James Bond film. We stick to a slower speed so you can enjoy the scenery, and we also make time for photo stops.

After the drive through the scenery, we drive through an undersea tunnel and arrive at Kvernes Stave Church. Stave churches are Norway’s most important contribution to European architecture. Kvernes Stave Church is richly decorated with leaf vines over walls and ceilings. The altarpiece and the rest of the church interior is characterised by the exuberant and colourful baroque style of the 17th century.
